Talk to the Animals

Last night we enjoyed a talk from Neil Vaughan from Shaldon Zoo.  Neil outlined the important work of the Zoo and its breeding programmes which have led to the conservation of endangered lemurs, tamarins and marmosets.

Neil also brought along some of his animals to show us how cuddly a spider can be and how interesting  reptiles are.  He allowed us to touch and stroke the animals which was a real privilege and a new experience for a lot of us.

If you would like to know more about Shaldon Zoo and its work, check out its website

Thank you Neil for a very entertaining evening with a difference!

COUNTY QUIZ

Three teams from Higher Teignmouth WI took part in the first round of the County quiz on Saturday and brains were stretched to the max as 100 questions were asked in quick succession!  Fortunately there was a break for tea and cake half way through.  All our teams did well but were not placed in the top two - that honour went to Parke and Chudleigh WI teams.

Anyway, we are all still smiling and it was a fun afternoon (thanks to Pat for the photos)

MAKING BRAG BOOKS

Last Thursday, we all enjoyed a lively Workshop making Brag Books.  These folded books can come in all sizes and can be used for many different occasions - a photo album, a holiday scrapbook, a thank-you after a visit  or a seasonal / birthday celebration.

Shirley Brokenshaw led the workshop and she took us through the stages of creating the Brag Book, giving us a chance to practise before making one ourselves.  A BIG Thank you to Shirley for all her preparation which helped to make this workshop so enjoyable and successful.

Talk on Alternative Therapies

At last night's meeting we all enjoyed a talk by Dawn Hall on Alternative Therapies.  Dawn is a Spiritual Healer.  She explained the philosophy behind her work and described some of her services to us.  These include holistic massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and reiki.  She had also brought some of her home-made products with her.   Dawn led us through a visualisation meditation which was a lovely experience.

Dawn does consultations at her own studio and she also has a stall at the market in Newton Abbot.  If you want to know more (or buy some more of her excellent products) this is her website link.

A Fabulous Collection

At Craft Club this afternoon we were treated to an Exhibition of Angela Parkes' work - All Kinds of Sewing. There were patchwork quilts and jackets, all sorts of bags, stuffed toys, embroidery and cushions.  The range and variety of skills on display was absolutely amazing!

Fifteen people attended and we were all enthralled with Angela's creativity and skill.  As you can see from the pictures below, her work is exquisite.

Thank you Angela for sharing your pieces with us - it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and we all left inspired.

Behind the Scenes at the Cenotaph Parade

On Tuesday at our monthly meeting we enjoyed a very interesting talk by Stewart Leach MBE about what happens behind the scenes at the Cenotaph Parade.  Stewart told us a bit about the background and history of this day.  He then talked us through the organisation required to make the parade run smoothly.  It was fascinating and really opened our eyes to just what goes on behind the scenes to make the day so effective.

After the talk, Stewart judged the competition entries - the brief was a handmade bookmark with a poppy theme.  There was as always a high standard as seen below.  Well done to our talented members!
