Fashion Show at M & Co

Yesterday evening we had a great time at the Fashion Show at M & Co. Teignmouth.   Our lovely volunteers modelled day-wear, evening-wear and festive wear and all looked gorgeous- as you can see from the pictures below.

A big thank-you to John Nixon for allowing us to use his photos (and for saving my bacon when I left my camera at home!)

Also thank you to M & Co for all their help in organising the evening which was well attended.  Teignmouth WI were able to donate £100 to the M & Co charity - Cancer Research UK - from our ticket sales and raffle takings.  So thanks to all for their generosity.

A really fun evening - here are the pictures:

Becoming Dementia Friends

After our inspiring and instructive talk from Heather Penwarden on Living with Dementia, all of us present signed up to be Dementia Friends.  This involves helping to create a more dementia-friendly community in which we are more informed and so can work to change the way people think, act and talk about dementia.

As a Dementia Friend, you can pledge an action such as:

  • get in touch and stay in touch with somone I know living with dementia
  • volunteer for an organisation that helps people with dementia
  • wear my badge and tell five friends about the Dementia Friends initiative
  • carry out a personal action e.g. be more pateient when out in the community or help soemone to find the right bus
  • make craft items like fiddle quilts

Here we all are: waving our cards and badges.

Kitchen Memorabilia

Our competition tonight was to bring in an item of Kitchen Memorabilia - here are some of the very interesting items our members brought in.

DEMENTIA AWARENESS

Our talk this evening was by Heather Penwarden who spoke about Dementia Awareness and explained to us how to be Dementia Friends   Heather explained what memory is and the different types of memory.  Then she described with very effective analogies what happens when our memory ceases to function efficiently.  She also had some excellent advice to help us understand how to live with Dementia in our family or friends.

The talk was most informative and we all learnt something.  It was also very moving and emotional for those of us who have or are experiencing the effects Dementia can have.

A big thank you to Heather for coming to speak to us.
