Secretary's Report - Teignside Group Meeting 2017

GROUP REPORT FOR TEIGNMOUTH WI SEPTEMBER 2017

Once again, we have been kept entertained at our meetings with a wide variety of Speakers – we kept fit on a chair (which was harder than it sounds!), learned about a huge range of crafts from Tracy Johnson and reminisced with Muffin the Mule.

We attended another Sugarcraft workshop just before Christmas which was a delight – there must have been some beautifully decorated Christmas cakes around last year!
Seven members attended a Hygiene course in June, and eight thoroughly enjoyed a First Aid course last month. All received certificates. Six members attended a Microsoft Workshop at The Firs recently which was informative and interesting.

Our annual events, Soup and a Crust, the Ploughman’s Lunch and the Cream Tea were as always very popular. The Mayor, Paul Burgess and his wife Nicky attended the Cream Tea again. I think they like our scones! We combined the Harvest Supper with a birthday party to celebrate our 50thanniversary. Members dressed in 1960s clothes and, of course, sang along to ‘60s music!
Our Christmas Lunch was held at the Dainton Golf Club and was enjoyed by all as was the Christmas Party.

Once again we entered a team in the County Quiz. Sadly we were not placed in one of the top three positions, but the team enjoyed meeting members from other Wis and, of course, the tea provided!
Six members spent the day at the Tavistock Goose Fair in October and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
This week we visited the Dartington glass factory at Great Torrington and found the tour round the factory fascinating. We were pleased that some members of Group Wis were able to come with us.

Our members have been very busy this year knitting hats for seamen and making fidget aprons for Dementia sufferers. The aprons were received with delight by residents of a Mental Health Unit in Exeter. One resident commented “You could look at each of the different parts and imagine whole worlds”. We were all very moved.
The Honiton disabled group came to tea again in July. It was good to see them all.
We collect coins for ACWW and unwanted spectacles which are sent to Third World Countries and have so far donated 125 pairs of glasses
. Following a visit by some of our members to Prickly Ball Farm, we collected dog and cat food and biscuit, fleeces, towels and a host of other requirements for use at the farm, particularly for the rescued hedgehogs there.
The Craft Club has had a makeover and is now “Bright Sparks” where members take turns to host a workshop. These vary from “40 ways to wear a scarf” to “making Christmas crackers”. Sometimes the host has just a little knowledge herself, but with the aid of a few books and lots of laughter, we get results.
One of our members entered and won the competition arranged by Dart Bay Food Crafts and Skills to design a set of four seed packets. Her designs have been printed on seed packets and are now on sale.

One member thoroughly enjoyed a course at Denman College in December, and another will be attending a course this month. A donation from our September raffle money was sent to Denman College.

We had once again been asked to participate in the St Michael’s Flower Festival and also in the St James Arts and Crafts Exhibition where several members displayed their work.

As ever, we are a very busy WI and are always looking for new ideas from our members.
