Fashion Show at M & Co

Keep Young and Beautiful

At last night's meeting, Eve from Estee Lauder in Exeter came to give us a talk about skin care and make up for the mature lady.  Eve introduced the range of products available and one of our members was lucky enough to have a make over.  Eve then answered questions on specific problems and gave us some useful advice.  It was an interesting and fun evening.

Social / Craft Afternoons are starting again!

Bring along unfinished projects, patchwork, crochet or anything else you have on the go.  Or just pop in for a chat and a cup of tea.  Our Social/ Craft afternoons are starting again.

We will be meeting on Thursdays at 2pm in the Richard Newton Hall - that means the 12th, 19th and 26th of September

We are also organising Craft Workshops in October and November:

• 10th October - Angela Purnell - Driftwood Art
• 14th November - Maureen Gleave - Spiral Rope Beading

This group is open to anyone who feels like dropping in

Shop Local & Save our High Street

Here at HTWI we’re thinking about how we can support the NFWI resolution to save the High Street. 

Our local traders are important whether in shops or markets and we want to support them.  At our last get together Emma Kay the Town Development Officer spoke to us about the initiatives she is taking to boost Teignmouth and get more people coming into the town and shopping there.  

Do you have any ideas about what needs to be done and how we at HTWI can support our local shops?  Add your comment and let’s get a discussion going.  We will be calling for ideas at our meeting on 10th September so have a think and share your ideas.

The main idea raised at the Cream Tea was the need for free parking in the town to make it as easy to shop there as it is at the big supermarkets.  Do you agree and how can we put pressure on the Council to do this?

Another idea that Emma developed was that we should be proud of the positives of living in such a great place as Teignmouth.  So let’s share our experiences.  Give us your recommendations for friendly High Street businesses in Teignmouth.  Who has been great and why?  

Cream Tea

A full house of members and guests enjoyed a delicious Cream Tea on Tuesday 13th August.  A huge vote of thanks to Angela and her Catering Team who seamlessly produced lovely scones, strawberry jam and cream with a good cup of tea. 

Maureen introduced Emma Kay,  the Town Development Officer for Teignmouth and Dawlish who told us about her work and her plans to encourage local shopping in these towns.  As HTWI strongly support the national WI resolution to increase support for local shops, Emma's short talk gave us some ideas of how we can do this.  Any suggestions from members are most welcome. 

We also welcomed representatives from other local WIs in our Group - it was lovely to have the chance to make contact and have a good chat.  There were also a number of visitors who we hope will soon become members.

CREAM TEA

Don't forget we are holding our Cream Tea at the Richard Newton Hall next Tuesday 13th August at 3pm.  Angela and her Catering team will be putting together delicious scones, jam and clotted cream with a lovely cup of tea.  Then it is up to you whether you put the cream on first then the strawberry jam (Devon-style) or jam first then cream!  It's a huge debate but either way it will taste good!

Also don't forget to bring contributions for the hampers we are putting together for the Richard Newton Hall's Autumn Fair - anything you'd like to find in a hamper and all donations gratefully received.  You can hand them to Maureen H, myself or any other Committee member.

Selling Cakes with a Smile on the Den

In spite of the drizzle and the gloomy start to the day, spirits were high and so were the donations of cakes, biscuits, cupcakes and all sorts of goodies.  A big thank you to everyone who donated and who helped to man the stall, especially to Angela who lent her gazebo which was much appreciated in the rainy conditions.

Once the sun came out so did the customers and sales were brisk with a £100 raised for HTWI funds. 

Luscious Lunch

It was a select group who met up for lunch at The Old Rydon Inn on Tuesday 23rd July - we had a really enjoyable get together and the food was delicious.  The desserts ( see apple and blackcurrant pannacotta below) were especially yummy.  Service good, ambiance chilled and the company excellent. A luscious lunch!

For all Ladies who Lunch

Don't forget that our monthly lunch is to be on Tuesday 23rd July at 12.30pm at The Old Rydon Inn at Kingsteignton.

The Old Rydon Inn is a grade II listed farmhouse which was part of Lord Cliffords Manor from the reign of Henry II up to the 18th century.  The restaurant lounge and dining room are in the oldest part of the building and still have the original elm screens dating from the early 16th century.  The restaurant, although a newer addition, is still over 150 years old and features a 50 foot well built in the middle ages.

When entering the pub through the low front doorway you'll pass a lamp made from the old "turn-screw " for the apple press which produced cider for the village.

The Devonian name 'Rydon' comes from the Old English "Ryge Dun"  meaning "Hill of Rye"

How to get there:

From Teignmouth follow the A383 until you reach the roundabout and follow the signs for Kingsteignton. At the next roundabout take the right hand into Longford Lane.  Continue straight along Longford Lane and then turn right into Rydon Road.  After going round one mini-roundabout The Old Rydon Inn is on your left.

The No 2 bus from Teignmouth goes past The Old Rydon so there is alternative transport!

The food looks delicious and the weather is set fair so it should be a good outing - hope to see you there!

Teignmouth Regatta - WI Cake Stall

The Higher Teignmouth WI will be running a Cake Stall on the Den as part of Teignmouth Regatta Week on Tuesday 30th July from 10am.

Cakes/ biscuits and any other goodies are needed so get baking!

Cakes can be brought to the Den on the day or the day before they should be dropped off at Angela Purnell's or Sonia's homes.

We also need some volunteers to man the stall - there are still some places left so if you can help, leave a comment or get in touch with Angela Purnell.

Should be a fun day!

Donkey Sanctuary Talk

  Yesterday evening Tuesday 9th July, the HTWI meeting listened to a moving and instructive talk given by Stephanie from The Donkey Sanctuary.

The Donkey Sanctuary was set up by Dr Svendson and is the largest donkey and mule charity.  The charity depends on donations and has no government funding.  Nevertheless to date 14,500 donkeys have passed through the Donkey Sanctuary's gates in the UK and Ireland.

The charity works worldwide to relieve the suffering of donkeys and to provide and maintain rescue homes.  Stephanie told us some sad stories of their work overseas in such countries as Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya and India.  However, she stressed the positive difference that the charity's mobile clinics make to the working life of donkeys.

In the UK the headquarters of the charity is at Sidmouth and anyone can visit the farm 365 days a year. Stephanie also talked about the work done in Europe rescuing and re-housing donkeys.  In the UK and Ireland, no donkey is ever turned away.

Stephanie also gave us some amazing facts:

• 11 donkeys a week come to the Sidmouth farm.
• As to life expectancy - at The Donkey Sanctuary a donkey can live to the age of 33 years, in the wild the age is 7 years and a working donkey can expect to live only 5 years on average.

The talk was warmly applauded by the audience and HTWI are hoping to make a visit to The Donkey Sanctuary to see their work and the donkeys up close!

Tea and Cakes

Members of the Higher Teignmouth put together a mouth-watering spread for the Honiton Group this afternoon Wednesday 3rd July. A big thank- you to all the hard workers on the afternoon, the ladies who made cakes and to Angela Purnell who master minded the whole event.

The tables looked beautiful with a lovely variety of sweet and savory goodies and floral decorations done by Angela.

The visitors from Honiton showed their appreciation by polishing off the tea and with a round of applause for the workers.  There were many compliments especially for Pat's coffee sponges and for the sandwiches.  All in all, the afternoon was a great success and ended with promises to return again next year.

HTWI Welcomes Honiton Group

Forty members of the Honiton Disabled Group will be joining us for afternoon tea tomorrow! Let's hope the weather improves by then! If you've promised to bring cakes or help, we look forward to seeing you there.
