August Cream Tea

Lots of ladies attended our August Cream Tea, the Mayor and Mayoress were in attendance, and a great time was had by all. Some of the members made knitted cakes for the competition, which you can see in the photograph below.

Sunshine, fine food and friendship

Here are a selection of photos of our evening at The Smugglers Inn There were 20 of us and we had a lovely evening of food & friendship a perfect ending to a warm summer day.

Afternoon Tea and skittles!

What a busy day Wednesday was! Teignmouth WI hosted 39 members of the Honiton Disabled group, for afternoon tea, our members worked hard to make sure the group had a throughly nice time, which by all accounts they did. Special thanks to Dee our catering manager who works so hard for these events with enthusiasm and a smile, as all our ladies do. The evening saw some of our ladies at a skittles match with other local WI groups, it was good fun and enjoyed by all, the evening raised £60 for the WI's Denman appeal. Below there are a few photos from each event.

St Michaels Flower Festival

Our WI members were invited to take part in the Flower festival at St Michaels Church in Teignmouth, Francis Dingley and Chris Hodgkinson offered to make the display. The theme of the festival is For All The Saints and they chose Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, as she is the patron saint of mothers, grandmothers, homemakers and sailors so seemed appropriate for a seaside WI. June Meeting

This month 38 members and 4 visitors came to our meeting, our scheduled speaker had been taken ill so a lovely lady called Leoni Wild stood in for him and regaled us with stories of her career in the performing arts. Leoni had worked in both TV and theatres and had many fascinating and amusing stories to tell us, the talk was enjoyed by all the ladies. Our competition this month was 'A Favourite Holiday Photograph, there were several entries but the winner was brought in by Mary Nixon, second place was Francs Dingley and 3rd was Doreen Rogers.

Liverpool Conference

Maureen Hunter, our President, went to the WI conference in Liverpool last week as our Link Delegate and had a great time, both resolutions passed and full report to be given at our next meeting 

St James Craft Fair

Several of our talented members had items on display at the Craft Fair in St James Church Teignmouth, and what a wonderful display it made! Well done to the two Angela's who set the display up.

Annual General Meeting 2017

The AGM is held on the second Tuesday in May, this year it was attended by 38 members and Cynthia Somerfield our WI advisor.
Chris Hodgkinson gave a report on the spring council meeting which was held in Torquay, which sounded very interesting and fun. Pam Webb informed the members that our 50th anniversary Rose has now been planted in the grounds of the hall.
The competition this month was a Flower Display in an Egg Cup, all the entries were eggsellent! First place was Doreen Rogers, second place was Hazel Powell and third place was Beryl Hopkins, below are pictures of the entries and winning displays.

The new committee was elected, they are Dee Harrington, Chris Hodgkinson, Pam Webb, Maureen Hunter, Jane Mason, Val Pilley, Kate Neville, Marion Wyatt and Julie Thornback.
Maureen Hunter was elected as President. I will post photos of the committee along with their roles as soon as I get chance to take them. A big well done to Pam Webb our out going President.

Devon County Show Poppy Dislay

Poppy memorial to those who lost their lives in the First World War

Thanks to the people of Devon, 

Devon County Show

are staging a moving tribute to the 

11,500 men and women from the 

county who lost their lives in the First 

World War.

Their stewards will be creating a river 

of 32,000 poppies in the majestic 

Crafts and Gardens Pavilion and a 

smaller display will be on show in the 

BBC exhibition.

All the poppies have been handmade 

by people who are paying respect to 

those who fought and died.

Poppies are roughly the same size 

but they are made of a variety of 

materials including wool, leather, 

wood and even metal. 

The vast majority of poppies are red 

and some are dedicated to the 

maker’s relative who died in the War; 

others are purple and created in 

tribute to the animals which died in 

the war effort.

After the Show the poppies will be 

carefully stored until Remembrance 

Weekend (November 11 and 12) 

when they will be displayed in Exeter

 Cathedral. 

Dementia Aprons

Several of the members have made Dementia aprons, these work as fidget blankets for people suffering from Dementia as they find it useful to have these to keep their hands busy. They will be sent to a Exeter Dementia ward. Picture below are the ladies with the aprons they have made. They will be gratefully received by their new owners and they all look fabulous. Well done to all those that managed to complete one.

Lunch and Skittles

The end of March saw our members meeting for Lunch at Mount Pleasant in Dawlish, for an enjoyable afternoon socialising and eating delicious food, the desserts were a big hit as you will see from the photos below. After lunch the members got together to practise playing skittles, everybody had a thoroughly good time. The photos below are provided courtesy of Sandra Cura. 

Devon Air Ambulance

March Meeting

The March meeting saw the members being informed and entertained by Norman Maudsley, who is a volunteer for Devon Air Ambulance, giving talks and helping to raise funds, he himself has managed to raise over £10,000. Norman told how the Charity started, and how the service has improved over the years. He gave us an insight into the work that the service carries out, the training that the people who work for the service receive, and also how important the fund raising is. The talk was very interesting and informative.

The competition was - design a logo for Devon Air Ambulance, below are the entrants.

Pam also displayed the dementia fidget aprons that some of the members had made, they were very much admired and a photo was taken with hopes of getting a write up in the local paper.

February and March

Exercising on a chair

February saw Judith King encouraging us to stay active by exercising on our our chairs, the talk was informative and fun and everybody enjoyed getting a little bit physical.

The competition was a hand made Valentine's card this was judged by our speaker and the winner was Carole Wood, followed closely by Shirley Brokenshaw in 2nd place and Betty Dumont in 3rd place. 

March Meeting-

The next meeting is 14th March at 7.30, speaker is Norman Maudsley and the subject is Devon Air Ambulance.

*We desperately need new Committee Members, our AGM is in May, so please consider joining, and
 if you need more information please ask at the next meeting.

*Craft Club meeting 16th March to discuss its future, please attend if you have any interest in keeping the craft club going, or have any ideas how to revive interest. The meeting is at the New Road Community Centre, 2-4pm.

*We need your ideas for trips and outings, where would you like to visit? What kind of things do you want your committtee to arrange? Please let us know.
