Family History

This months talk was about exploring our family history and was given by Colin Roulstone. The talk was fascinating and Colin gave us lots of tips for getting started, and showed us lots of interesting slides. The competition was an old family photograph and there was a massive 25 entries! Colin had a very difficult time choosing a winner and two runner up photos. Everybody seemed to enjoy the evening. Unfortunately there are no photos, as I was so caught up with the talk and photos that I forgot to take one! Apologies.

LADIES WHO LUNCH-THE MUNCH BUNCH

Some of our WI ladies visited The Thatched Cottage Restaurant in Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot on Thursday 17th March. The food was excellent as you can see from the photographs, and the ladies very much enjoyed the food and surroundings as well as the excellent company.
Thanks to Carole Wood for photographs.

This month’s lively talk was Driving Safer for Longer by Mike Hull of the Devon Driving Academy which is based at Westpoint. Make gave some very good advice on the perils of driving nowadays, from aggressive motorists to glare on windscreens. The competition was A Humorous Driving Limerickwhich was won by June Hewitt.

There was an old lady from Haldon
Who drove ev’ry day down to Shaldon
She so loved the view
But this formed a queue
Of drivers who cried “Get a move on!”

Our second speaker was Richard Brent, a trustee of the new Pavilions Teignmouth. This exciting new facility is owned by the District Council, run by a Community Trust and will rely on lots of local volunteers.  The multi-purpose main area can seat 220 people for cinema and live theatre shows and there are offices to rent along with three studio rooms.  There will be a restaurant on the roof with magnificent views over the bay and a cafĂ© on the ground floor.   On April 16th there will be a Barn Dance/Ceildh with the Mooncoin Band and it is hoped to get up a party of members to pop along to enjoy the fun.

The February meeting was very well attended. We now have 69 fully paid up members. The talk was given by Jenny Paton from Paignton Zoo, about their work at the zoo and around the world. It was very interesting and informative and it seemed that everybody enjoyed it. The competition this month was a knitted animal, keeping with the theme. There were 14 excellent entrances, difficult to get a photo of them all together.

Bead Making at the Craft Club

On Thursday afternoon the ladies from the craft club enjoyed a workshop from Shirley, on bead making. Shirley provided lots of equipment and beautiful paper for us all to have a go. I can honestly say, the two hours flew by, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed it, the craft club ladies all managed to go home with beads to make some jewellery with. We all enjoyed a cup of tea and lovely cakes provided by Maureen and Norma. Many thanks to Shirley for a fun and enjoyable class. Thanks to Pat for taking photographs.

An Excellent Start to the Year

We had a very busy and exciting start to 2016 at our meeting last night.  Many members returned and there were lots of visitors.  Thanks to Barbara who baked a cupcake for every member in celebration of her birthday - they were much appreciated.

The second photo is of Commander David Vaughan, OBE, the Harbour Commissioner who is judging the competition photo on a sea theme.  He gave a very interesting talk on the port of Teignmouth and there were lots of questions.

The winner of the competition was Shirley and this is her excellent picture.
